• POSITION PURPOSE

• Perform specimen accessioning, file slides and tissue blocks, answer phone calls, prepare specimens to be sent to reference laboratories, accession PAP’s to send out, emailing/phoning concerning order issues, and discarding specimens.

• MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED

• High School or Equivalent (GED)

• MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

• Entry Level

• LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

• KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED

• Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to read, write, speak, hear, and comprehend the English language.

• Medical terminology training preferred.

• PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Accessioning specimens. Status recording of the collection date and time in the Laboratory Information System.

• Filing slides and tissue blocks.

• Clear communication with patients, physicians, and fellow employees.

• Maintenance of the assigned work area, including disinfections and stocking supplies.

• Send out procedures for multiple reference laboratories.

• Preparing PAP specimens for send out.

• Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nurse, or other histology personnel; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying coordinator or manager of unresolved orders.

• Assists with histology clerical work. Answers phones, receives specimens and performs pre-analytical preparation for samples including send-outs.

• Performs pending log resolution.

• Works under the supervision of a Histologist.
