Sr. System Design Engineer
AVL Test Systems is searching for a Sr. System Design Engineer to join our team in Plymouth, MI. This is a great opportunity to help grow the facilities area by providing guidance and expertise to both internal employees and AVL customers.
The Sr. System Design Engineer provides specification and engineering of facility related sub-systems and integration of AVL equipment for multiple types of testing applications. The role has strong involvement in complete Tech Center projects. The position supports all phases of test system related facility planning, from conceptual to definitive design based on global and local building project plans. This support includes calling for tenders, definition of sub-system specifications, submitting and verifying quotations as well as collaborating with both suppliers, design engineering for 2D/3D layouts, and preparation of related calculations. For Tech Centers, this position also requires consultancy for the customer in methodology as well as time scheduling, monitoring, and support during construction process and handover to the customer.

ROLES:
The Sr. System Design Engineer provides the required systems integration and design necessary to support sales activities or execute customer projects according to the ITS Project Engineering Process.
The specific roles of a Sr. System Design Engineer include:
Continuous collaboration, alignment of interfaces and solutions with other engineering disciplines and global community
Reuse of solutions and best practices done in other projects
Single point technical contact for customer projects (provides deviation & exclusion to RFQ)
Completes engineering evaluation, manufacturing and installation documentation necessary to deliver test system in accordance with customer specifications
Support during manufacturing, installation, commissioning, acceptance, warranty phase
Executes project in compliance with engineering principles, local codes, company standards(processes, technology, methodology), maintainability and customer requirements
Coordinates and executes technical design reviews
Meet milestones and ensure fulfilment of functional requirements per project demands
Utilize appropriate CAD and engineering tools to create best in class solutions
Supports Sales by providing technical input, labor & material estimates to customer requirements
Provide feedback and information for continuous improvement
Support problem solving process, 8D reports and quality department
Continuous increase of performance by acquiring skills in usage of tools, modules and products
Support the preparation of function description and test cases
Define test cases (only in the role as system integrator)
Additional tasks/duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
Experience and Education
5+ years’ experience in area of expertise
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent job-related experience in addition to minimum experience required
Master’s degree preferred
A Sr. System Design Engineer is expected to have demonstrated abilities in the following areas:
Commercial
Technical quote lead for a medium size program
Efficient on time delivery of project expectations with consistently high feedback
Technical
Identify and support opportunities for technology development, process improvements, tool development, and knowledge capture and re-use.
Actively pursues utilization of Global AVL products and technology
Expert with local codes and regulations as they relate to automotive test facilities and equipment
Maintain current knowledge of industry benchmarks and trends
Proficient in MS Office applications, including Excel, Visio and Project
Knowledge of customer base and customer applications and needs
Independent functionality in the following areas / systems (relative to area of expertise):
Solidworks, REVIT or AutoCAD for mechanical and 3D designs
Data acquisition and controls system design and implementation
Pneumatic and hydraulic design
Design of rotating equipment
Frequency and stress analysis
480V / 220V / 110V power distribution systems
Building utility systems including ventilation, water systems, air, fuel, fire protection, and pipe distribution
Knowledge of SAP, EPDM is an advantage
Relational
Leadership of small to medium size technical teams
Working effectively with customers and other program staff and team members
Accountability for individual and team delivery
Active pursuit of personal and departmental improvement
Effective communication with all levels of the project team
