Job Title: Engine Development Technician
Job Description
Work with Engineers in the Pontiac Propulsion Labs to develop and test engines. This role involves calibration development, mechanical experiments, fabrication, and manual test points to ensure engines are optimized for performance before validation testing. The position is on the 3rd shift, working from Sunday through Thursday, 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.
Responsibilities
Work in laboratory setting using AVL/PUMA and emissions equipment.
Tune and calibrate engines using software such as HP Tuners or standalone systems.
Run and operate manual testing on a dynamometer.
Collaborate with Test Engineers to manipulate fuel tables, air-intake, spark, and exhaust to achieve optimum performance.
Perform mechanical swapping of engine components to test different combinations for optimal performance.
Work at the component level, including tasks like changing oil pumps, heads or cams, fuel injectors, and spark plugs.
Assemble, modify, and fabricate existing engines to prepare for testing.
Fabricate components on engines and test stands/dynos for testing.
Instrument between the engine and the dynamometer.
Perform TIG welding on parts and components.
Essential Skills
Experience with engine dynamometers (3-5 years).
Hands-on experience with engine rebuilds, tear downs, assembly, repair, prototype, hand tools, fabrication, assembly, and troubleshooting.
Proficiency in using AVL/PUMA and emissions equipment.
Engine tuning and calibration using HP Tuners or other standalone systems.
Ability to perform manual testing on a dyno.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Associate's degree.
Experience in a laboratory setting.
Mechanical experience modifying or building aftermarket vehicles.
Experience with calibration and tuning engine variables.
Work Environment
The work environment includes a very clean test lab and garage within an air-conditioned facility. Basic tools are required, but GM will provide a toolbox and any unique or specialty tools. The facility offers a full-service cafeteria from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and ample parking, though some walking may be required to enter the building. The Pontiac facility is one of the largest engine testing facilities in the U.S., featuring over 100 dynamometers for testing gas engines, hybrid and electric motors, transmissions, and experimental propulsion systems.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $35.00/hr.
