Portage Public School Paraprofessional - Visual Impairment in Portage, Michigan

*Paraprofessional - Visually Impaired Student Support (ESI)*

*7.5 Hours Per Day M-F - 7:30-3:00 PM* *Northern High School* *$15.20+/Hour*

*Job Summary: *Under direction of the teacher or teacher consultant, the paraprofessional performs a variety of activities to support instructional programs and facilitate independence for students with visual impairments in a general or special education classroom per Individualized Education Plan (IEPs).

*Essential Duties and Responsibilities:*

  • Assist teacher during the lesson by modifying, enhancing, or adapting classroom activities, assignments and materials to support student with visual impairment.
  • Reinforce academic skills, organizational skills, and conceptual development as per students' IEP.
  • Work one on one with a student with a visual impairment. 
  • May read aloud to student any inaccessible text. 
  • May work as a scribe as needed.
  • May explain visual settings or pictures to student.
  • May guide student to classes.
  • May assist in facilitation of student participation in group activities/discussions.
  • May assist student in acquiring accessible materials.
  • Regular and consistent attendance.
  • Must have knowledge of and comply with the policies and procedures contained in the Portage Public Schools Employee Handbook.

*Qualifications:*

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent. 
  • The equivalent of 2 years of college (60 semester credits) or an Associate's degree or higher *OR *the successful completion of the MDE approved Paraprofessional standards test (ETS).
  • Experience working with children. 
  • Demonstrated abilities in the area of interpersonal communication.
  • A high degree of patience, ability and willingness to learn new skills and take direction.
