University of Maine System Assistant Professor in Public Health - Fall 2025 in Portland, Maine
The Muskie School of Public Service’s program in Public Health at the University of Southern Maine invites applications for an Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) in Public Health with a focus on Health Management and Policy or Social and Behavioral Health beginning September 2, 2025.
The successful candidate will teach courses online (asynchronous and synchronous), hybrid and in-person in our accredited Master of Public Health (MPH) and Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) programs. Specific teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate courses on the topics of American Health Systems; Health Policy; and Health Disparities & Social Justice. This is an on-campus position, which will include in-person and online teaching modalities and in-person student advising.
The ideal candidate would have a combination of teaching, scholarship, and practice experience in one of the above-mentioned areas, along with a doctoral degree from a Council on Education for Public Health-accredited public health program or school, or a comparable doctoral degree. For example, the candidate could be an academic with some professional experience and a focus on healthcare management or administration, social and behavioral health, community health, or policy. Based on existing program strengths and needs, specific topical areas of interest might include rural health research, health services research, health economics, healthcare policy, or the intersection of public health with nursing and other allied health fields.
This faculty member will focus on building integrative connections in graduate study within and across universities at the University of Maine System (UMS). The faculty member will be expected to build capacity within the department to collaborate with other UMS universities and programs, including the UMS Graduate and Professional Center. Potential partnerships include a Public Health concentration within the Master of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs; a Healthcare Systems concentration within the Master of Business Administration; and a Health Law concentration within the Master of Legal Studies program.
This will be a tenure-line faculty position (nine-month appointment) with a base teaching load of three courses per semester, and the balance of time focused on scholarship, service, and student advising. The faculty member will assist with accreditation and have responsibilities for mentoring and building the undergraduate program. Given these responsibilities, we seek a candidate with an interest in and capacity for leadership and external coordination.
This faculty member will be expected to work collaboratively with other faculty members, advise and collaborate with undergraduate and graduate students, and engage in research and scholarship activities. The Public Health Program at USM is a small, highly collegial program. We are focused on serving the diverse needs of Maine’s student populations. This is an on-campus teaching position that will pay an annual salary of $65,000. Candidates must reside within commutable distances from the USM campuses. Required Qualifications:
An earned doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, DrPH, or ScD) in Public Health, or a related field, or ABD with evidence of completed doctoral degree to be provided by position start date.
Teaching experience that demonstrates inclusive pedagogy/andragogy practices, and a commitment to educational equity and inclusion.
Effective written and oral communication skills.
Willingness and potential to develop, lead, and coordinate academic public health programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in the scholarship or practice of health systems, policy, or management.
Experience advising and mentoring students, and engaging students in scholarship activity.
Experience developing online courses.
