The Phlebotomist will be responsible for greeting patients as they arrive at the lab, performing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, and updating patient information. The role requires collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures, explaining the venipuncture process clearly and courteously, and demonstrating techniques using straight and butterfly needles. The Phlebotomist must understand all physicians' orders, match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, and package specimens for transport while ensuring proper storage and labeling. Additionally, the Phlebotomist must comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, attend annual department trainings, handle insurance and billing, and provide excellent customer service.
Responsibilities
Greet patients as they arrive at the lab.
Perform blood draws and label specimens.
Centrifuge specimens and record maintenance data.
Update patient information.
Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
Explain the venipuncture process clearly and courteously.
Demonstrate techniques using straight and butterfly needles.
Understand and follow physicians' orders.
Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy.
Package specimens for transport, ensuring proper temperature and labeling.
Follow procedures to maintain the integrity of specimens.
Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
Attend annual department trainings.
Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results.
Handle insurance and billing processes.
Provide excellent customer service to patients.
Essential Skills
High School Diploma or GED.
6+ months of phlebotomy/venipuncture experience in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
Previous customer service experience in any setting.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Ability to take feedback well and eagerness to learn.
Patient-first mindset.
Positive, hardworking attitude, initiative, and ability to work well with others.
Proven reliability and positive attendance.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Personality fit is crucial; must be positive, hardworking, take initiative, and work well with others.
Previous experience in a similar role is advantageous.
Work Environment
This position is located at Labcorp @ Legacy Emanuel in Portland, OR. The schedule is Monday-Friday, 6:00 PM-4:00 AM with rotating weekends. The initial contract duration is 3 months, with the possibility of extension based on performance and business needs. The work environment includes a fast-paced lab setting, and adherence to safety and regulatory standards is required. The role involves handling various specimens and providing excellent customer service. Dress code and specific work conditions are aligned with lab and hospital protocols.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
