What is a Training Specialist?
A Training Specialist is responsible for planning, designing and developing, delivering, evaluating, and monitoring technical training programs that ensure full compliance with Utility Operations such as Gas and Electric Transmission & Distribution requirements, the Company’s safety policies and programs, OSHA rules, and all other applicable governmental codes and regulations. Duties could also include leading the implementation and management of training and development programs that are designed to improve the competency and skills of Central Hudson employees.
What does a Training Specialist do?
Partners with management, Gas and Electric Operations, and subject matter experts (SMEs) to ensure the technical training curriculum’s full compliance with all Company, state, and federal rules and regulations (e.g. OSHA, Operations and Maintenance Procedures)
Regularly interprets operating procedures and incorporates them into technical training curriculum and programs in partnership with SMEs
Consults with managers, SMEs, and learners to identify training needs and then builds quality, measurable learning objectives to eliminate or mitigate gaps
Develops, implements and delivers training programs for various levels of employees across the organization that align with our company strategy and development initiatives
Develops technical training materials (e.g. course agendas, instructor and participant guides, learning aids, etc.)
Coordinates, monitors, tracks, assigns, schedules and maintains Company and regulatory compliance training records
Evaluates training program effectiveness through assessments, surveys, and feedback
Develops and monitors spending against the departmental budget
Maintains knowledge of the latest trends in training and development
Represents the Company as a member of committees such as the Northeast Gas Association Training and Operator Qualification Committee and shares knowledge with team members
Performs other related duties as required
Provides storm/emergency response support
What does it take to be a Training Specialist?
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Organizational Development, Human Resources, Communications or a relevant field. In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, an associate’s degree in the aforementioned fields and at least 3 years of related experience in training, employee development, utility operations or similar. In lieu of a degree, a high school diploma or equivalency degree and at least 5 years of related experience in training, employee development, utility operations or similar.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn new software programs quickly
Experience with and/or the ability to learn a variety of multimedia training platforms and methods (e.g. Captivate, Articulate, etc.)
Strong presentation and facilitation skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to quickly synthesize and create course content based on input from subject matter experts, general business periodicals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations
Ability to handle sensitive and/or confidential documents and information with care
Ability to design and implement effective training and development programs
Ability to evaluate and research training options and alternatives
Valid driver’s license
Preferred:
Experience in Energy & Utilities or services industry; strong knowledge and experience in regulatory and compliance requirements
Experience using a Learning Management System (LMS) to coordinate, track, and report on employee training
Knowledge of and experience with Gas Operator Qualifications
