Overview
The Senior Specialist, Faculty and Staff Accommodations works to assess, coordinate and facilitate implementation of reasonable accommodations for Staff and Dean of the Faculty employees by working with Occupational Health Services, HR Benefits, HR Client Services Team, OGC, Institutional Equity and Diversity, and employees and managers. The Senior Specialist works to advance accessibility in University programs and services in order to ensure compliance with Federal and State laws. including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination, which prohibit discrimination on the basis of disability. The Senior Specialist provides overall ADA expertise in the context of clinical and medical assessment of needs, and coordination of the interactive process for employees with accommodation requests. The Senior Specialist collaborates with the appropriate offices and external vendor(s). The Senior Specialist will provide support and guidance on all aspects of accessibility and accommodation related to physical and mental health and other workplace/operational arrangements.
Responsibilities
Principal Duties:
- Engage in the process of determining eligibility of employee accommodations through review of documentation, consultation with department managers, employees, partner offices to review and determine reasonable accommodation requests.
- Coordinate and engage in the employee interactive process once medical conditions are confirmed via Occupational Health.
- Track and document all requests and outcomes and ensure consistent response in the context of the job descriptions and operational needs.
The Senior Specialist provides overall coordination of reasonable accommodations under the University and applicable laws. The Senior Specialist works in collaboration with other offices as named, to evaluate medical information, restrictions/limitations, and accommodation requests.
Responsibilities include 1) engaging in discussion with the employee, their manager, and HR or DOF as appropriate, 2) evaluation, 3) record keeping, 4) identification and facilitates implementation of accommodations, 4) monitoring, 5) accommodation notification/documentation, and 6) consultation with partner offices as needed.
The Senior Specialist will provide support and guidance to HR and DOF in providing guidance on all aspects of accessibility and accommodations for the University including physical, and mental health and other associated workplace accommodations, short or long term.
The Senior Specialist supports DEI initiatives and efforts. This may involve participation on committees or conducting trainings as needed. The Senior Specialist will generate and update HR and DOF website content and other promotional materials as well as making recommendations for policy and process improvement. This process includes ongoing review and development of procedures. Develops and presents information and training material to educate the University community about the accommodation process.
Qualifications
Essential qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of experience
- Problem-solving skills, organization, electronic, verbal and written communication skills
- Experience reviewing clinical/medical documentation, conducting interactive/iterative processes for determining and providing accommodations; excellent judgment, personal maturity, strong interpersonal skills
- Knowledge/expertise regarding current state and federal law and regulation related to the ADA, PWFA, Section 504, NJLAD; and of federal regulatory requirements for educational institutions receiving federal assistance.
- Ability to manage multiple, on-going and complex caseload of disability-related matters; superior attention to detail
- Strong client service mentality and ability to interact with a diverse population of staff and faculty
