Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions in this band work somewhat independently. Work tasks have variety and require judgment.

Work Schedule

  • Less than 233 hours per quarter and may be year round or

  • 233 hours or more in a quarter with a maximum of six months employment or

  • Not to exceed 1,039 work hours within any fiscal year

Essential Functions

Include, but are not limited to:

  • Monitors the facility and staff during weekend and evening hours.

  • Enforces policies, rules, regulations, and ordinances governing the conduct of facility patrons.

  • Guards the pool during facility use. Enters the water to rescue patrons in distress; resuscitates rescued swimmers, administers first aid to injured, calls Emergency Medical Services (EMS) on serious accident cases.

  • Under direction, oversees water safety, swimming and diving, and assists with special events.

  • Plans daily program activities/schedules.

  • Assists in instructing new employees on the duties of operating a facility or program.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Age: 16

Education: One year of high school

Experience: One year paid lifeguard experience

Certifications: Lifeguard Training, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid

Preferred Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Experience: Two years paid lifeguard experience

Certifications: Water Safety Instructor, Certified Pool Operator

Working Conditions

  • Conveys and exchanges verbal and written information.

  • Tasks require physical condition necessary for walking, standing, sitting and performing swimming rescues.

  • Walking on various surfaces including uneven ground that may be slippery.

  • Work may be performed outdoors in a variety of weather extremes.

  • Ability to react to emergency situations by quick movements, strenuous activity, and on occasion assist or lift persons in distress of varying weights.

  • May come into contact with pool chemicals.
