ICF 2025 Summer Intern, Energy Analytics (Masters, Remote) in Reston, Virginia

Description

We are hiring an intern to work in our Utility Programs and Services practice. You will contribute to the enhancement of the analytical capabilities of the team, develop subject matter expertise in the Distributed Energy Resources (i.e., energy efficiency, demand response, electrification, energy storage and more) technologies, and help support utilities expand their DER efforts to meet the demands of the future.

The Energy Analytics team is a leader in utility demand-side planning, program design, and program implementation analytics. Our highly collaborative team structure, thorough understanding of our client’s needs, and our ability to connect the practical on-the-ground experience enable us to help clients make big things possible.

As part of your role, you will have opportunities to apply your academic knowledge while interacting with experts and clients in the field. Our interns are provided with training to develop consulting skills as well as specialized skillsets in the DER space in an environment that fosters growth.

This is a full-time, 10-week internship that will begin in early June 2025. Work may be performed remotely from any U.S. location. At this time, we are unable to provide housing nor relocation assistance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement and enhance quantitative and economic analyses that assess Distributed Energy Resources (DER) value.

  • Support strategic decision-making by evaluating and benchmarking decarbonization programs for multiple projects.

  • Support the development of internal- and external-facing tools and projects that enable strategic decision-making processes.

  • Assist with market research on various DER technologies and programs and gather data to benchmark DER programs.

  • Assist with developing innovative energy efficiency and electrification program strategies and designs.

  • Develop energy-saving calculations and economic analyses for the residential and commercial sectors supporting utility energy efficiency programs.

  • Manage and analyze large datasets using advanced Excel functions, presenting analytical outputs using PowerBI, R, and/or Python visualization tools.

  • Contribute to the preparation of client presentations and short reports to stakeholders.

Minimum Qualification:

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program within Energy Management, Energy Policy, and Planning, Public Policy, Economics, or another closely related subject (Anticipated graduation of August 2025 or later).

Preferred Qualifications/Skills:

  • Preferred graduation in December 2025/Summer 2026

  • A passion for the energy industry, with a specific interest in DERs

  • Knowledge of energy policy and regulation especially related to DER / DSM. Experience in regulatory and public stakeholder processes would be highly valued.

  • Understanding of economic valuation such as NPV and IRR analysis, and utility cost-effectiveness tests

  • Experience with data identification, collection, transformation, and analysis

  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including knowledge of basic programming.

  • Strong writing and communication skills with the ability to clearly express ideas, thoughts, and concepts to appropriate stakeholders.

  • Organizes written work in a manner that is clear, easy to follow, and tailored for the intended audience.

  • Experience with data handling in advanced excel.

  • Experience with energy modeling tools (e.g., OpenStudio, EnergyPlus)

  • Demonstrates trustworthiness and upholds the highest ethical standards.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position.

The pay range for this position based on full-time employment is:

$39,435.00 - $67,040.00
