Responsibilities

As a key member of PNNL's Communications team, this role combines strategic relationship management with hands-on internal communications expertise. The position serves as both a trusted advisor and execution-focused communications professional supporting the Operational Systems Directorate (OSD). OSD is responsible for managing PNNL's facilities and infrastructure; environment, health, safety, and security programs; project management; and nuclear operations. Working at the intersection of Communications and OSD, this role ensures effective information flow while maintaining strong partnerships that advance the Laboratory's operational excellence and safety culture.

Partnership Management

  • Serve as the primary communications liaison between the Operational Systems Directorate (OSD) and Communications, managing relationships and coordinating communications needs.

  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with OSD stakeholders to understand their business priorities, challenges, and communications requirements.

  • Proactively identify communications opportunities and potential issues.

  • Align OSD communications efforts with Lab-wide narratives and messaging frameworks.

Communications Planning & Strategy

  • Develop and implement comprehensive communications strategies aligned with both OSD and broader Lab objectives.

  • Lead communications for OSD initiatives, ensuring clear, consistent, and impactful messaging.

  • Coordinate with the broader Internal Communications team to support Lab-wide staff communications efforts.

  • Identify and plan proactive communications opportunities that enhance operational effectiveness.

  • Establish and track metrics to measure communications effectiveness.

Content Development & Creation

  • Write and edit clear, compelling content that translates complex concepts into accessible staff communications.

  • Develop multi-channel content including executive messages, newsletter articles, intranet stories, presentation materials, and digital signage.

  • Maintain consistent voice and messaging across all communications materials.

  • Build and manage a content calendar aligned with operational milestones and initiatives.

  • Ensure all content meets PNNL brand standards and editorial guidelines.

Project & Management

  • Lead complex, multi-phase communications projects from conception through execution.

  • Develop and maintain project schedules, milestones, and deliverables.

  • Use established task management system to track projects and assign work.

  • Coordinate cross-functional teams including subject matter experts, reviewers, and creative resources.

  • Manage communications budget and resources effectively.

  • Identify and mitigate potential risks to project success.

  • Balance multiple concurrent projects while ensuring quality and timeliness.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 7+ years of relevant experience -OR-

  • MS/MA and 5+ years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated expertise in internal communications strategy and execution

  • Strong relationship management and stakeholder engagement abilities

  • Excellence in written and verbal communications

  • Experience providing communications counsel to senior leaders

  • Project management skills with ability to handle multiple concurrent initiatives

  • Strategic thinking with proven ability to translate complex topics into clear messages

  • Understanding of communications measurement and analytics

  • Knowledge of change management communications

  • Digital communications and content management system experience

  • Track record of implementing communications best practices

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
