Position Summary
The Department of Biology at UW-River Falls seeks a Laboratory Manager I who is responsible for overseeing the technical activities, operations, planning, and policy development of the department’s laboratory services. This role ensures the quality control and regulatory compliance of laboratory activities, coordinates multiple projects and staff, and supports both teaching labs and research facilities. Additionally, the Laboratory Manager plays a critical role in maintaining safe, clean, and organized lab spaces following the UWRF Risk Management Department’s safety requirements. This position also manages inventory orders and ensures proper equipment maintenance to meet the departmental supply needs.
Responsibilities
Assist faculty and student workers in locating necessary supplies or equipment, operating equipment, and coordinating the use schedules for lab rooms and equipment.
Lead and supervise the daily laboratory operations and student workers concerning laboratory cleaning, restocking, and general maintenance tasks.
Manages basic stock supply inventory and orders materials for teaching and research labs as requested by faculty.
Perform routine maintenance on lab equipment and coordinate repairs or replacements as needed. Identify, propose, and implement new or revised operational policies and procedures in alignment with teaching and research goals.
Communicate with the department chairperson and group processor regarding budget management, purchasing records, student payroll, and facilities maintenance requests.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Required Qualifications:
Expert knowledge of standard laboratory procedures;
Proficiency in following protocols for preparing laboratory materials.
Capability to troubleshoot issues related to laboratory equipment.
Competence in managing departmental inventory of supplies and equipment.
Understanding of the proper handling of hazardous materials.
Experience in budget monitoring and ordering supplies for laboratory use (in collaboration with Group Processor).
Effective communication skills for managing student workers and their schedules.
Capacity to train student workers in proper laboratory protocols and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications:
B.S. degree in Biology, Life Science, or a related field.
