The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Responsibilities:

Provides liaison support between academic projects within the College and Regional and or Nationally supported programs, targeting underrepresented and/or underprivileged students/others in the community. Provides project support, including counseling, referrals and information on the support services available to address the special needs of the program or project. Performs outreach efforts in communities to promote programs.

Responsibilities

General Purpose:

The David T. Kearns Center works to increase the educational outcomes of low-income, first-generation college, and underrepresented minority students across the educational pipeline. The academic advisers in the College Programs work with students from their first year through graduation. This position will focus on advising first- generation college students who are from low-income families.

Resposibilities:

Academic Advising and Student Support

• Manages an advisement portfolio, up to 130, of advisees over a four- year period from matriculation to graduation; all of which are first- generation college students. Provides advisement and support about course planning, educational goals, career aspirations, college policies, and opportunities for engaging in campus life.

• Communicates regularly with students about upcoming activities and deadlines.

• Refers students to other offices and resources including faculty advisors and academic support services.

• Guides students through the major declaration process, answers questions regarding financial aid, and monitors progress toward the degree.

• Proactively assists students who are experiencing academic difficulties.

• Participates in ongoing training and professional development opportunities as a member of the larger College Advisor community on campus.

• Maintain notes and student records. Maintains data informing the Center of student population served.

Teaching & Curriculum

• Teach seminar/cohort classes for Kearns students as needed. Design and implement workshops, student, alumni and staff events, and other programs in conjunction with stated expectations of funded projects. Serve on Center and College committees as needed.

Recruitment

• Assist with recruitment and interviewing of new students into the Kearns Scholars Program, as well as other College Programs. Host open houses and present to student groups

Student Engagement

• Develops leadership and diversity training to hone student skills.

• Assist with small- and large-scale events.

Other Notes:

• 1-2x per year Air or automotive travel with students and other staff (sometimes only with students) to research conferences and graduate school fairs/visits. Attend professional development training workshops as appropriate.

• Serve on Center wide committees.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree required

• Master's degree required preferred

• At least two years of experience working with students in the target population, a desire to work with college students, an understanding of the experiences of low-income, first-generation college students at R1 institutions; or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.

• Experience and training in fields that relate to the Center's objectives required.

• Valid NYS driver's license required.

• Strongly prefer some teaching experience at the college level preferred.

• Experience with university systems (Workday, HRMS, URStudent, etc.) preferred

• Strong desire to help fulfill the departments' objectives of increasing the numbers of low-income, first-generation college students who excel academically; and supporting the climate for equity and inclusion in AS&E required.

• Ability to communicate effectively, and work on a team are essential.
