The Utah Department of Transportation is looking for a motivated person to be an In-Service Bridge Inspection Team Leader in the Structures Division. You will lead one or more inspectors in the in-service inspection of bridges under the direction of the Bridge Inspection Program Manager. You must have, or be able to obtain within one year of hiring, a CDL and qualify to operate an under-bridge crane. You must also be able to become a Nationally Certified Bridge Inspector (CBI) within one year of hire (the applicable National Highway Institute course will be paid for by the department). Principal Duties As an In-Service Bridge Inspection Team Leader, your duties will include:
- In-Service Bridge inspection planning and scheduling.
- Evaluation of and documentation of the condition of bridges on Utah's State and Local Government roadways through in-service bridge inspections, report generation, checking, and review.
- Developing appropriate safety and/or service plans for in-service bridge inspections.
- Training of other In-Service Bridge Inspection Team members.
- Coordination with local government agencies, private companies, consultants and other areas/divisions of UDOT.
- Presentation of inspection findings to engineering staff for inclusion in bridge planning and response.
- Using tools and instruments such as small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Ultrasonic Testing, tablet computers, Etc. to aid inspections.
- Emergency response bridge inspection(s).
- Coordinating traffic control for inspection activities.
- Maintaining the structures database and evaluating/determining condition trends.
- Construction inspection of small bridge projects.
- Scoping of future bridge rehabilitation or preservation projects.
- Perform bridge Load Ratings.
- Other duties as assigned, as necessary to accurately assess and maintain the health of Utah's Structure Inventory.
Minimum Qualifications In order to qualify, you must:
- Have, or be able to obtain within one year of hire, a valid CDL license and be able to maintain a valid license thereafter (the applicable training will be provided by the department).
- Be, or meet the requirements to be within one year of hire, a Certified Bridge Inspector (the applicable National Highway Institute course will be paid for by the department).
- Have, or be able to obtain within one year of hire, a Remote Pilot License from the FAA (the applicable training will be provided by the department).
- Have at least 6 months of bridge inspection experience.
- Be registered as a professional engineer in Utah (Engineer III).
- Position may be filled as an Engineer II for those who do not meet the criteria of being registered as a professional engineer (this includes those that are licensed in other states pending licensure in Utah), but have satisfactorily completed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) and two years of engineering experience post graduation. Selected candidate must be able to pass the PE exam within one year of hire.
- Position may be filled as an Engineer I for those who do not meet the criteria of being registered as a professional engineer, but have satisfactorily completed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE). Selected candidate must be abl e to pass the PE exam within one year of hire.
Preferences Preference may be given to those that have non-destructive testing certifications, such as ultrasonic, dye-penetrant, mag-particle, welding, etc Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Here are some of the knowledge, skills and abilities that are typically associated with the job, though not all-inclus ve:

Supplemental Information Here is some information you should be aware of:
- This position requires occasional overtime and frequent travel. The travel is approximately 1 week per month and may last up to 4 nights (5 days) in duration.
- This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing of employees after hire. A conditional offer of employment may be made pending drug test results.
- Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
- Requires the incumbent to inspect bridges from above and below using various equipment and may include working at heights, in confined spaces, and with outside elements such as insects, inclement weather, etc.
- Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader.
