The Treasury Office encompasses the major central financial functions for the University of Washington, including cash and institutional forecasting, external and internal lending, and banking, and accounting operations. The Assistant Treasurer reports to the Associate Treasurer for Cash & Liquidity within the Treasury Office. The Assistant Treasurer will lead the institutional financial forecasting process for the Treasury Office, including working closely with campus partners to gather data and understand the underlying drivers impacting campus units. As the individual owner of the financial forecast, this individual must effectively collaborate with other Finance, Planning and Budgeting (FPB) divisions or departments, campus partners (e.g. Facilities, UW Medicine, UWINCO) and leverage relationships with peer institutions to benchmark, determine best practices, and implement improvements to forecast methodology. In 2024, the Cash & Liquidity team’s scope expanded to include enterprise-wide financial forecasting, and there are substantial opportunities to increase the impact of this work. The Assistant Treasurer will need the ability to think creatively, work collaboratively across FPB, and communicate effectively as we seek to grow our capabilities and impact. Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills are needed to be successful in this role. The individual needs to be a self-starter, curious and comfortable with high degrees of ambiguity.
Duties & Responsibilities: Lead and maintain the institutional financial forecast
Gather data from campus units (Facilities, Medicine, Office of Research, etc.) and lead efforts to more fully integrate certain forecast inputs; work with FPB partners to streamline data collection
Continuously work to improve the forecast process and methodology by providing thought leadership and applying best practices
Work with vendor to actively seek ways to best utilize the forecasting tool and troubleshoot issues
Lead efforts to leverage Workday Finance and Workday Adaptive Planning to obtain insights and data that can inform the institutional forecast
Analyze and present results of the institutional forecast; work with Debt Management & Analytics team to address questions related to debt capacity analysis
Perform sensitivity analysis, run various scenarios, and analyze actual institutional performance vs. projections
Collaborate with Cash & Liquidity colleagues to build connections between the institutional forecast and the cashflow forecast
Prepare ad-hoc analysis and reports and present to management Support efforts to implement and expand new initiatives in the Forecasting space
Partner with Budget Operations and Institution Analytics & Decision Support to identify synergies, share knowledge, and drive better outcomes for all teams
Lead the integration of unit-level budget planning into the institutional financial forecast in partnership with other FPB stakeholder units
Assess feasibility to implement more frequent updates to forecast
Improve ability to support ad hoc forecasting needs in support of major institutional initiatives
Lead efforts to link the institutional forecast with the UW Medicine forecast to improve alignment
Serve as a consultative partner to other FPB units in the effort to build and maintain projected financial performance metrics for senior leadership decision-making Develop peer relationships across campus and within the higher education sector
Build and maintain strong working relationships within FPB to support cross-team collaboration
Develop positive working relationships with key campus partners including UW Medicine, UW Facilities, and UWINCO; help partners understand how campus projections impact the institutional forecast work
Participate in meetings with higher education peers to discuss forecasting challenges in the sector
Leverage peer network to identify best practices and apply learnings to the financial forecast Provide periodic support to other FPB departments and/or Treasury teams and other projects, as assigned
Assist in evaluating forecasting tools and systems
Cross-train on and provide assistance with cash forecasting, as needed
Ad-hoc projects as assigned Lead Responsibilities: Responsible for leading the financial forecasting process, gathering and processing data, making periodic updates, regular and ad-hoc reporting, managing the day-to-day operations with the software provider, and making recommendations on future tools for forecasting, including the consideration of AI tools. Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Accounting or related field and 6 years of experience in finance, to include a minimum of 2 years of experience with financial forecasting.
An equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may substitute for degree.
Experience creating and maintaining financial models in Excel or other forecasting platform;
Detail-oriented with strong analytical skills including the ability to work with, synthesize, and summarize complex data
Ability to partner, collaborate, and take initiative in a decentralized environment
Curious, a self-starter, strong problem-solving skills, and a continuous improvement mindset
Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to build and maintain effective relationships
Experience handling multiple concurrent projects; ability to manage multiple priorities in a highly dynamic environment
Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, including an ability to effectively communicate complex ideas and/or results to diverse audiences
Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven work environment
Advance Excel skills and strong PowerPoint skills

Familiarity with the University, higher education and/or university systems
Experience using ERP, cubes, or other systems to access and analyze data
