Port of Seattle Systems Engineer in Seattle, Washington

Some of what you'll be doing:

As a Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and managing enterprise systems critical for Port of Seattle Business operations and the public. You will continuously evaluate and improve techniques to optimize performance and achieve business goals adhering to the established standards, processes, and best practices.

  • You will proactively monitor systems to identify and resolve issues and provide 24x7 on-call support to recover systems from critical failures.

  • You will be responsible for monitoring, identifying, and resolving any issues, performing regular maintenance tasks, and updating the system as necessary.

  • You will work with other Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Engineers, external agencies, vendors, and business units to deploy, configure, and manage technology platforms, management systems, and enterprise business applications.

  • You will be responsible for integrating the system into the organization's infrastructure and you will work with software developers and other engineers to ensure the development of the system is according to Architecture and Security standards and best practices.

  • You will follow the System Design Process by working with various ICT Engineering teams, business units, and external vendors to develop system architecture using technology standards and industry best practices.

  • You will adhere to established team and organizational standards, processes, and procedures and meet the organization's set goals for Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and deadlines for tasks and projects.

Who you are:

  • Experienced – You have two (2) years of experience in Information Technology.

  • Desired – We hope you have a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or Business Administration. In addition, it would be preferable if you have Salesforce Administration and Development experience (Apex, Triggers, SOQL, SOSL, Lightning Web Components, Aura Components, Visualforce).

  • Expertise – You have expertise in Windows and Linux servers, virtualization (VMWare), and networking protocols (Firewall, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, Active Directory, SNMP). You are skilled in any programming languages (Java/JavaScript, or .NET programming, etc.), scripting (PowerShell, Python, Ruby, Linux Shell Scripting), and Agile/DevOps tools (Puppet, CHEF, Azure DevOps, Ansible). You can also write SQL queries for databases like MSSQL, Oracle, and MySQL.

  • Efficient Communicator – You have strong communication, collaboration, and presentation skills. You possess strong writing skills and can express complex technical information clearly and concisely. You can write technical documents, such as system runbooks, user manuals, and operational procedures.

  • Adaptable – You learn and adapt to unfamiliar technical environments very quickly. You are self-motivated with an aptitude to self-learn and bring creative and innovative ideas to the team.

  • Analytical – You possess strong analytical and problem-solving abilities combined with critical thinking and capable of analyzing complex systems, identifying problems, and solving technical issues.

  • Highly Organized – You plan and prioritize tasks, manage timelines, and coordinate with other stakeholders. You are able to manage external vendors and contractors.

What else you need to know:

  • Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role. You may be required to work any and all assigned shifts, including weekends and holidays. You may be required to work during emergencies.

  • Work Environment - This work will take place in a hybrid/in-office setting at Management’s discretion.

  • Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.

  • Security Requirements – As the successful candidate, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance.

  • Security Requirements – In this role, you will be required to access Port of Seattle Police Department equipment, office locations, systems and/or vehicles. In compliance with Federal and State laws as the successful candidate, you will be required to pass a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) criminal history background check.
