RELX INC Senior Publishing Ethics Expert in Shanghai, China

Within Elsevier’s Science, Technology and Medical Journal (STMJ) publishing division, we are seeking a Senior Publishing Ethics Expert to strengthen the Research Integrity & Publishing Ethics Centre of Expertise through leadership and team management; policy and best practice execution; testing, piloting and implementation of technological solutions to screen for research integrity; and the provision of support on research integrity cases to STMJ colleagues.

STM Journals publishes more than 2,800 peer-reviewed journals. Elsevier is committed to nurturing and upholding research integrity within our journals and within the wider research community. The role of the Senior Ethics Expert will be to lead a team of 5-6 Ethics Experts and Ethics Analysts as they resolve publishing ethics cases for STMJ’s Publishers and Editors, including the management of cases assigned to the team to meet deadlines; design pilots to assess third-party tools that screen manuscript submissions for research integrity concerns, and contribute to Elsevier’s own efforts to develop such tools, including through workflows and other protocols; and implement best practices that promote research integrity and conduct training to raise awareness amongst internal and external stakeholders.

We are seeking a candidate with knowledge of scholarly research and publishing best practices and a deep understanding of research integrity, as well as experience of leading and coaching teams and working within a matrix environment. The candidate will be skilled at communicating across diverse stakeholder groups, both within Elsevier and outside Elsevier, and in working with other leaders to set priorities and deliver high-quality results.

Key Results Areas:

Team management and leadership

  • Managing up to six team members in a global organization

  • Coach the team to work with diverse stakeholders across Elsevier – including the Publishing teams, Legal team, Technology teams, and Operations team – to resolve ethics cases

  • Coach the team to be open to change and user feedback, and to develop a strong customer-focused perspective in resolving cases

  • Recruit, retain and develop our talent: develop the team to an expert level

Prioritizing and coordinating the resolution of large, complex ethics cases

  • Prioritizing the management of complex cases according to risk and need

  • Coordinating multiple complex ethics cases across a team to adhere to deadlines, ensuring that team members understand sensitivities and nuances to effectively investigate and resolve cases, including communications with all parties, and operational actions such as retracting or withdrawing papers

Providing support and guidance to the Publishing Teams and Editors on publishing ethics

  • Providing consistent guidance and support to Publishing teams and Editors to resolve publishing ethics cases which are handled by the Publishers

  • Working with the L&D team to contribute to the development and provision of education and training on research integrity and publishing ethics to Publishing teams and Editors

Detecting and preventing the publication of unethical research by identifying, developing and implementing tools, processes and policies which support research integrity

  • Develop insights into the volume and type of ethics cases and their complexities to identify appropriate tools, technologies and processes which enable STMJ to handle ethics cases consistently, thoroughly and in a timely way

  • Work with teams across Elsevier, including Legal, Technology and Operations, to identify and implement technology and automate checks which flag potential unethical behavior in submitted manuscripts

Presenting Elsevier as a thought-leader in research integrity and a trusted partner to the clinical and research communities

  • Stay up to date on market trends and changes to best practices and act as a thought leader for research integrity and publishing ethics within Elsevier

  • Represent Elsevier to COPE and other bodies, such as STM Integrity Hub Working Groups and Crossref, where research integrity is central

Experience and skills

  • Strong experience / 5+ years in scholarly research, scholarly publishing, and/or research integrity

  • Proven record in delivering results, prioritizing customer and business needs, and collaborating with different teams

  • Excellent ability to communicate findings and recommendations in a clear, effective, and engaging manner for diverse audiences

  • Proven experience managing a team, with a strong focus on coaching and developing talent

  • Tertiary-level degree or higher
