Sanford USD Medical Center, located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is an academic medical institution affiliated with the University of South Dakota (USD). It serves as a primary teaching hospital and healthcare provider in the region. Sanford USD Medical Center is expanding its pathology team and looking to add a fifth Pathologists' Assistant to their already well-established group. With 8 Surgical Pathologists, 1 Forensic Pathologist, a Pathology Fellow, and 8 Pathology Residents, this team is dedicated to both high-quality patient care and medical education.

This position provides an ideal balance of teaching residents and medical students, handling large, complex specimens alongside routine surgical and biopsy cases. You will be working in a collaborative environment, under the supervision of board-certified pathologists.

This position offers a full-time, 40-hour workweek with daytime hours and no weekend shifts, providing the ideal opportunity to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Rotating daytime shifts include eight-hour shifts starting no earlier than 6:00 AM and ending by 4:30 PM, along with one 10-hour shift (6:00 AM to 4:00 PM) each week, offering an additional scheduled day off. Scrubs are provided, and you will have access to free on-site parking and the physician’s lounge.

PAs play an integral role in the autopsy service, which involves teaching pathology residents, participating in death investigations and forensics, and having the opportunity to conduct forensic postmortem autopsy examinations.

Responsibilities

a. Describing gross features of surgical specimen

b. Consult with the attending pathologist to determine appropriate special techniques, including cultures, flow cytometry, toxicology, etc.

c. Coordinate requests for special specimen sampling, such as for research or special studies

d. Perform postmortem examination including external exam, in-situ organ inspection, evisceration, organ dissection, case dictation, microscopic review, case reporting.

e. Assist residents with special procedures, including frozen sections and tumor triage.

f. Perform specimen photography and radiology as needed.

g. Teach pathology residents and medical students how to perform gross specimen assessments, postmortem examinations, and identify anatomical parameters of surgical specimens.

h. Prepare the body for release to the appropriate funeral home.

i. Provides technical and administrative support for the Pathology department

j. Participate in department performance improvement activities as directed

k. Bearing accountability and responsibility for own actions.

l. Assist in preparations for accreditation inspections.

m. Maintain compliance with Sanford Facility Safety and Infection Control protocols, and adhere to all Sanford Facilities policies.

n. Demonstrate strong attention to detail and a deep commitment to maintaining high-quality standards.

o. Exhibit flexibility, adaptability, and a strong commitment to the position.

p. Work independently as well as collaboratively within a team setting to maintain a consistent, reliable, and high-quality workflow.

Job Summary

Under the direction and supervision of a physician, perform gross description, dissection of human tissue, surgical specimens and performs postmortem exams. Must utilize critical and independent judgment in decision-making and problem-solving.

Qualifications

Master's degree in Pathologists' Assistant required.

Due to changes within the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) in 2010, employees with a Bachelor's degree and a Health and Human Services (HHS) approved laboratory Pathology Assistant certification may be considered for hire under leadership review.

Possess a Health and Human Services (HHS) approved laboratory certification as a Pathologists’ Assistant. Registry eligible candidates must successfully complete the Board of Registry examination within 12 months of employment.

Due to changes within the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), employees hired on or before 2010 with no license are grandfathered.
