The Minnesota Board of Social Work (BOSW) is a state-wide executive branch agency dedicated to protecting the health and safety of the citizens and visitors of the State of Minnesota by regulating the practice of social work. BOSW keeps Minnesotans safe by 1) licensing qualified social workers, 2) investigating and resolving complaints when services do not meet standards, and 3) providing outreach and education.

The Assistant Director 1) provides leadership and s upervises the Board’s licensing programs and licensing s taff to ensure compliance with the Board’s Statute; 2) e xercises supervisory authority over employees in the Licensing Unit to ensure applicable labor agreements and plans are equitably administered and employees effectively perform assigned job duties; 3) assists the Executive Director and the Board in developing and implementing public policies, fiscal proposals, and business strategies to meet its mission of public protection; and 4) collaborates to promote, develop and implement the Board’s education and outreach strategies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of experience administering licensure, complaint, credentialing or quality assurance processes related to professional employment. Bachelor's degree in social work, public administration, government, law, or a closely related field may substitute for one year of experience. Master's degree in social work, public administration, government, law, or a closely related field may substitute for 18 months of experience.

  • Academic knowledge/training and experience in the practice of social work.

  • Supervisory or lead work experience, including directing, facilitating, evaluating and reporting on staff performance.

  • Leadership skills sufficient to develop, motivate, and lead a team to accomplish the board's expectations for productivity, quality and goal accomplishment.

  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to effectively prioritize, conceptualize, analyze, manage, and resolve complex issues.

  • Advanced interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.

  • Excellent verbal, written and technical communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex issues effectively and professionally to diverse audiences.

  • Strong analytical skills to interpret, understand and apply complex and varied licensing related, legal and policy requirements and procedures.

  • Computer literacy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in social work with a valid social work license.

  • Experience with the legislative process, drafting of legislative proposals, building relationship with the legislature and relevant stakeholders, and implementing passed legislation.

  • Knowledge of state regulations, policies and procedures regarding health occupation regulation.

  • Knowledge of the Minnesota Data Practices Act.

Additional Requirements
