Regions Hospital Per-Diem Lactation Consultant in St. Paul, Minnesota

Regions Hospital is seeking a Per-Diem Lactation Consultant. We have received the highest ranking from the Institute for HealthCare Improvement (IHI) for patient safety. We are proud to be a Baby Friendly Hospital and to support the largest midwife practice in the Twin Cities and note that over half of our deliveries are done by midwives. We work as an interdisciplinary team with physicians, midwives, residents, and students. Under the general direction of the Nurse Manager, the Lactation consultant provides counsel to patients in the inpatient and the outpatient setting. The Lactation consultant makes assessments in person or on the phone, providing guidance for breastfeeding issues, including but not limited to difficult latch, low milk supply, insufficient weight gain, and prematurity. The Lactation Consultant makes appropriate referrals to members of the interdisciplinary team. The Lactation Consultant assists in the development and teaching of lactation education to nursing and medical staff. The Lactation Consultant performs related duties as assigned. Our state of the art Birth Center was built in 2020. Featuring 160,000 square feet - 13 Labor and Delivery rooms, 2 operating rooms, 24 Postpartum rooms, and 7 NICU rooms. Our Level 2 NICU features 7 private rooms including 1 twin room for a total of 8 beds, each with an adjoining family space and bathroom to keep families connected. Regions Hospital is one of the few hospitals in the country to feature the Enhanced Couplet Care model. 5 of our Postpartum rooms are outfitted with a full NICU headwall, allowing a subset of our NICU babies to stay in the Postpartum room with their families and avoid separation. This evidence-based model of care provides many benefits including improved weight gain, more effective feedings, and fewer hospital readmissions. The Birth Center at Regions has approximately 2800 births annually with 15-20% of babies requiring some amount of NICU-level care. We are dedicated to diversity and inclusion, with 60% of our patient population being people of color, and 25% requiring interpreters for their care. Work Schedule: Per-Diem. Day shifts. Will need weekend availability. Required Qualifications: Completion of a healthcare related program (e.g. physician, physician assistant, registered nurse or respiratory therapy). Two years' experience in same or similar role in lieu of completion of healthcare related program is accepted. Currently certified as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) or will be in 6 months. Demonstrates at the time of employment and every two years thereafter, competency in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Knowledge of lactation physiology, breastfeeding techniques, basic and complicated lactation problem solving techniques. Ability to effectively communicate to all ages of mothers and their companions. Knowledge of teaching and learning principles. Preferred Qualifications: Six months (1,040 hours) of clinical experience in maternal/child is preferred. Six months (1,040 hours) experience as a Lactation Consultant preferred.
