Location: Colonial Healthcare, a part of Optum - 308 Wesmark Blvd. Sumter, SC 29150

Schedule: Monday - Wednesday, and Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Thursdays: 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining patient confidentiality, HIPAA while working professionally with coworkers and provider that sees an average of 61 patients a week.

  • Patient intake to include obtaining vitals, chief complaint, relevant history including pain status, medical history, surgical and hospitalization history, maintaining current medications and allergies at each office visit.

  • Documenting all information into patient's chart, set up and assist provider with procedures.

  • Assist providers with obtaining and ordering needed prescriptions and refills for chronic and acute health problems, to include e- prescribing.

  • Drawing labs, administering medications by mouth and injections.

  • Disposing of contaminated supplies.

  • Logging onto the DHEC database to obtain immunization history, performing EKG, spirometry, cerumen removal, dressing of wounds, glucose finger stick, rapid flu, rapid strep, COVID-19 testing, urinalysis, urine pregnancy test, RSV, visual acuity, 6-minute oxygen test, suture and staple removals, pelvic exams to include Pap and other GYN testing.

  • Administering oxygen and nebulizer treatments.

  • Placing splints, casting, continuous glucose monitoring, Holter monitors, durable medical equipment.

  • Provides patients with education for ongoing treatments, new diagnosis, and exercise instructions. Logging onto the vital connect portal for Holter monitors, documenting placement and results monitoring the status of the Holter monitor for the placement 7 to 14 days (about 2 weeks). Notifying the patient if Holter monitor has been disconnected.

  • Responsible for daily checks and logs for glucose controls, vaccine fridge, temperature, and humidity in the workplace.

  • Researching the quality needs daily for all patients being seen by logging into the Data Core portal.

  • Completing attestation forms during the patient's visit then scanning to the appropriate location.

  • Scanning EKG, spirometry, and superbills daily.

  • Keep the work area neat, orderly, and properly stocked with needed supplies daily.

  • Maintains daily log for our compliance log and huddles for quality.

  • Responsible for answering patient calls, answering voicemails left by patients and pharmacies, receiving faxes, DME requests, home health requests, hospice requests, medication refill requests, and inputting Tricare referrals.

  • Responsible for outgoing referrals to other specialists that the provider orders and following up on any outgoing referrals to get records, obtaining hospital records, calling patients with abnormal results to set up follow up appointments per the providers requests.

  • Chart prep for the next day visits to include reason for visit, test results, specialist office notes, or hospital TOC information.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or completion of an equivalent adult education program

  • Medical Assistant diploma, technical certificate or certification OR 3+ years of experience performing the critical skills of a medical assistant after on-the-job training

  • Active medical assistant certification (CMA, CCMA, NCMA or RMA)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPR certification

  • 3+ years of clinical experience in a Family Medicine setting

  • Experience working as a Medical Assistant or EMT

  • Experience with electronic medical record software

  • Experience performing medical back office tasks including obtaining vital signs, injections/immunizations, phlebotomy, urinalysis and administering medications

  • Experience performing medical front office tasks including scheduling appointments, prior authorizations, medication refills and referrals
