Summary:
Responsible for managing the flow of sterile instruments, supplies and equipment through the Central Sterile department with awareness of all activities within the hospital departments that are supported by the department. The Sterile Processing Supervisor functions as the central point of contact for the SPD staff, Infection control, and nursing departments. Manages internal and external communications within the department and throughout the hospital.
Essential Duties and Functions: Maintains compliance of the sterile processing department with the standards set by TJC, AAMI and Infection Control.
Manages, coordinates, and directs the day-to-day work activities of assigned staff; trains staff in work methods; interviews and makes hiring recommendations.
Responsible for the departments staffing schedule and maintains acceptable staffing levels to support clinical requirements.
Assesses the education needs of the sterile processing technicians and coordinates delivery of education, orientation, inservices, and process improvement projects with the Director of Surgical Services.
Supervises and evaluates assigned staff, handling all employee concerns, assists with counseling and disciplining employees when necessary, and completing employee performance appraisals.
Monitors function and quality of equipment necessary for decontamination and sterilization process. Reports results to the Infection Control Department.
Responsible for department metrics related compliance with infection control and AAMI (Association for Advancement of Medical Instrumentation) standards in instrument and equipment processing turnover times.
Ability to lead the department in performance improvement activities and facilitates active participation of the staff. Investigates all incidents, accidents, complaints and grievances in collaboration with Corporate Compliance, and Risk Management. Prioritizes capital budget requests and maintains communication with the Director of Surgical Services assessing equipment and instrument needs.
Participates as an active member of committees as assigned.
Networks with the nursing departments to develop and refine the process for sterilization, decontamination and processing of instruments, supplies and equipment for patient needs.
Qualifications:
Education: High School Graduate or equivalent required.
Experience: 3-5 years central sterile experience or surgical tech experience required. Previous supervisory experience is strongly desired.
Certification: Central Sterilization/AAMI certification recommended.
Skills: Basic computer skills are required. Must have excellent organizational skills and time management skills. Must be able to complete required reports with accuracy and meet prescribed deadlines. Must be innovative in problem solving, communicate well, be able to supervise central sterile staff, and manage effectively with available resources. Must be able to work without continuous supervision. Work is not completely standardized. Assignments are often received in the form of results expected, due dates and general procedures to follow.
Job requires detail-oriented mentality and the ability to work independently. Lack of consistency in detail could result in increased errors in processing sterile equipment, noncompliance with infection control standards, breech of patient safety initiatives and lower staff productivity.
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including sterile processing equipment, computer, printer, calculator, copier, facsimile machine, and telephone. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. This position requires: walking, standing, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, seeing, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds force frequently.
