Empower Federal Credit Union Staff Accountant in Syracuse, New York
Role:
The primary responsibility of this position is to maintain the credit union's accounting records and reports, ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) as well as specific credit union accounting practices. This role involves a blend of detailed analysis, reconciliation, and collaboration with various departments to ensure accuracy and efficiency in financial reporting.
Location: Our headquarters are based in Syracuse, NY. We work in a Hybrid Model requiring a minimum of 5 days in office per month.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
25% Daily Journal Review & Reconciliation:
- Review and verify the accuracy of journal entries and accounting classifications.
- Analyze and reconcile high-risk accounting functionalities, including Teller Cash and Vault G/Ls, ATMs, Check 21, share drafts, and daily official check balancing.
- Collaborate with other departments and branches to resolve issues promptly.
- Provide cash reconciliations to Internal Audit on a regular basis.
25% Financial Reporting & Budget Preparation:
- Prepare and process all financial, statistical, and accounting records for EIS and ETS.
- Responsible for journal entries, checks, accounts payable (A/P), fixed assets (F/A), financial reporting, and budget forecasting.
- Analyze and perform monthly account reconciliations to ensure accurate intercompany postings.
- Assist SVPs and EIS/ETS management in budget preparation as a shared responsibility.
20% General Ledger Analysis:
- Conduct monthly analysis and reconciliations of numerous general ledger accounts for management review.
- Perform detailed expenditure analysis upon request, adhering to NCUA guidelines.
- Collaborate with departments to address discrepancies and enhance balancing efficiencies.
- Provide variance explanations during month-end closing.
20% Capital Expenditure Management:
- Prepare and analyze actual capital expenditures against budget monthly.
- Review reports with Vice Presidents on capital expenditures.
- Responsible for fixed asset and prepaid budget projections as a shared responsibility.
10% Audit Contribution:
- Assist in the preparation for internal and external audit.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Performance Measurements:
- See Dayforce (HRIS) Performance Management for Goals upon start in role, and annually.
Knowledge and Skills:
Experience: 1 to 3 years of professional accounting experience is required, with a focus on financial reporting, general ledger management, and account reconciliation.
Education: A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline is required for this role.
Interpersonal Skills: Work involves much personal contact with others inside and/or outside the organization for the purpose of first-level conflict resolution, building relationships, and soliciting cooperation. Discussions involve a higher degree of confidentiality and discretion, requiring diplomacy and tact in communication.
Other Skills:
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft 360 software is essential for data management and reporting.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills are necessary for effective collaboration and presentation of financial information.
- Strong ability to plan, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks and assignments efficiently.
- Effective decision-making and problem-solving abilities are crucial for addressing challenges that arise in financial operations.
- Maintain a high standard of professionalism in appearance, demeanor, and interactions with colleagues and clients.
- Adherence to all credit union and departmental training requirements is essential to ensure knowledge of current practices and regulations.
