Job Summary:

This position will be responsible for leading the execution of MUFG’s governance and oversight framework for consistent financial crimes compliance (“FCC”) risk management across the enterprise (both within and outside Japan). In this role, the successful candidate will work with various functions across lines of business, entities, and jurisdictions and will manage key elements of MUFG’s global FCC risk management framework.

Major Responsibilities:

Group Governance & Oversight – This area of responsibility focuses maintaining the oversight framework and coordinating subject matter expert (“SME”) involvement in FCC risk management matters across MUFG’s primary subsidiaries in Japan and overseas. Major responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining MUFG’s FCC policy implementation framework and overseeing execution of FCC risk management activities across the enterprise;

  • Directing alignment efforts across the enterprise to ensure that MUFG entities manage their financial crimes risks consistently and effectively;

  • Aggregating and analyzing reporting that the MUFG entities provide and recommending next steps, as appropriate;

  • Managing interactions between MUFG entities and Home Office, including administering information-sharing protocols and coordination mechanisms so that different MUFG entities can share financial crimes risk management information with Home Office and other MUFG entities;

  • Assisting FCC SMEs with reviewing information received from the MUFG entities and supporting alignment efforts;

  • Developing and maintaining working relationships with vertical and horizontal partners, including entity executives, FCC SMEs, Legal, and Internal Audit; and

  • Interfacing with relevant regulators and Internal Audit on group governance-related matters across MUFG.

Mergers & Acquisitions and Other Business Transactions Due Diligence – This area of responsibility focuses on managing MUFG’s framework for assessing FCC risks presented by mergers and acquisitions (“M&A”) and certain higher risk business transactions (e.g., wholesale lending transactions with certain borrowers). Major responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing execution of MUFG’s FCC due diligence processes for M&A and certain higher risk business transactions;

  • Directing integration of newly acquired entities into the MUFG portfolio;

  • Coordinating interactions between target entities and MUFG stakeholders in relation to financial crimes compliance;

  • Providing management-level reporting on these due diligence activities; and

  • Interfacing with Internal Audit and relevant regulators, as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required; law degree or Master’s degree welcome.

  • Minimum of 10-15 years’ experience in banking or other financial institution setting with at least 5-6 years in risk management, preferably in the compliance/FCC space;

  • Strong knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements in the FCC space with experience in different jurisdictions;

  • Experience in program governance/oversight design for large financial organizations, including management of governance documents;

  • Strong writing and communication skills;

  • Team player and ability to work collaboratively;

  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage complex projects on a global scale;

  • Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and manage competing priorities;

  • Ability to establish and maintain strong relationships across multiple departments and work horizontally across teams and at various levels in the organizational hierarchy; and

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and knowledge of reporting/analytics tools, such as Power Bi and Tableau.

The typical base pay range for this role is between $180K - $240K depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and location. This role may also be eligible for certain discretionary performance-based bonus and/or incentive compensation.
