Munson Healthcare Orthopedic Technician in Traverse City, Michigan

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: High school education or equivalent.

Legible handwriting/printing. Demonstrates accurate basic computer skills.

Effective verbal communication skills.

Completion of hospital training program and orientation program. Able to accept direction from multiple sources.

Works within the policies and procedures of the Nursing Service and the Hospital.

Demonstrates competence in patient care skills as defined in the Nursing Assistant position description.

ORGANIZATION: Under the general supervision of the Unit Manager of D4/Orthopedic Services. Receives direction from Physicians, Registered Nurses, and Administrative Supervisors. No managerial or supervisory responsibilities.

May be subject to elements of time pressure and interruptions of activities. May be sked to rotate shifts or units. May be required to lift more than 35 pounds.

Has basic understanding of Relationship-Based Care (RBC) principles, meets expectations outlined in Commitment To My Co-workers, and supports RBC unit action plans.

Uses effective customer service/interpersonal skills at all times.

Assists the Orthopedic Surgeon with dressings, and treatments as they apply to Orthopedics, including knowledge of sterile technique.

Applies traction as prescribed by the Orthopedic Surgeon, using guidelines in procedure manual.

Supplies, maintains, stores and keeps cost accounting for Orthopedic supplies and equipment with manager of D4/Orthopedic Services.

Demonstrates and/or instructs in positioning, applications and nursing procedures as applied to the Orthopedic patient in:

Traction devices, slings, and suspensions, Halo vests.

Proper splint applications, removing and reapplying of splints.

Crutch gaits and the fitting of crutches, canes, and walkers.

Applications of cast and care.

Is familiar with the measuring for, fitting of and application of braces and Orthopedic Prosthesis.

Is able to make temporary customer splints and apparatus as prescribed by the Orthopedic Surgeon; Alerts manager of D4/Orthopedic Services and other Orthopedic Technicians regarding any changes made in equipment.

Keeps orthopedic tech room and storage areas neat, clean and orderly.

Maintains all orthopedic equipment in neat, clean and operation order and knows procedure to obtain necessary repairs from other departments.

Documents procedures performed on patients in powerchart. Documents CPM set-up and patient instructions orders, increases and decreases.

Each Ortho Tech is responsible to complete patient charge items used and document time spent.

Accurate log kept of Specialty Beds and appropriate patient charges monitored.

Patients in halo traction to be added to shift rounds.

Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
