POSITION SUMMARY

This position serves a central role in improving transfusion safety through education, active surveillance, and quality improvement activities. This position is responsible for coordinating the development of (or improvement of existing) transfusion related policies, procedures, and guidelines. This role will serve as a liaison between laboratory and the clinical areas where blood products are used as well as clinical researchers.

Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards.

CORE FUNCTIONS

  1. Provides education and serves as a resource to identify and implement current concepts in transfusion safety.

  2. Develops effective tools to measure performance, prepare reports and develop solutions to improve transfusion safety.

  3. Educates clinical staff about specimen labeling requirements, administration of blood and blood components, and how to recognize, respond and report potential transfusion reactions.

  4. Performs audits of blood product orders to identify providers ordering outside of defined acceptable criteria.

  5. Captures, investigates, and reports all deviations from transfusion program policies and procedures, including mislabeled specimens.

SCOPE AND COMPLEXITY

Responsible for blood transfusion quality activities within the hospitals served. Partners with the Section Chief for Blood Transfusion and other clinical partners to develop and implement best practices. Serves as the primary non-physician liaison for laboratory and the clinical care areas. This position has frequent contact with hospital and LSA executives and operational/clinical leadership, as well as other stakeholders.

  • Requires extensive sitting with periodic standing and walking.

  • May be required to lift up to 20 pounds.

  • Requires significant use of personal computer, phone and general office equipment.

  • Needs adequate visual acuity, ability to grasp and handle objects.

  • Needs ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or on telephone.

  • May require off-site travel.

  • Must use standard precautions due to threat of exposure to blood and bodily fluids.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to exercise good judgement, reasoning, thinking skills.

  • Time management skills with the ability to work on and prioritize multiple concurrent tasks with frequent interruptions.

  • Financial and budget acumen.

  • Ability to perform in a complex, diverse and ambiguous work environment.

  • Expert-level working knowledge of principles, practices, and operations in transfusion safety.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's in nursing or medical laboratory science.

  • Five (5) years’ experience in a healthcare setting managing a clinical program.

  • RN State license or ASCP (MLS).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's Degree preferred.

  • Previous experience in quality management & improvement initiatives within a healthcare setting.

  • Additional related education and/or experience
