JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Electronic Materials and Devices Department (EMDD) in the Materials and Manufacturing Office at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) is seeking an Electronic Materials Research Faculty to develop and manage applied research and development project that support our Navy, DoD and Industrial sponsors. This position will join a team of scientists and engineers performing a wide range of fundamental and applied research and development projects involving bulk crystal growth, thin film deposition, chemical vapor deposition, material characterization and device/sensor design, fabrication and characterization of semiconductors, optical and piezoelectric materials and devices.

You will: Develop and support research projects that involve coordination of scientific efforts across laboratories, companies, and other entities to enable the transition of technologies from laboratory to application. Specify and/or develop high temperature material synthesis processes for bulk crystal growth and thin film deposition, focused on ultra wideband gap semiconductors Use a wide range of characterization methods to assess material properties. (UV-Vis-NIR, FTIR, PL/PLE, optical microscopy, GDMS, LA-ICP-MS, SEM-EDS, XRF, EPMA XRD, Raman, SEM-EBSD) Support the utilization and maintenance of single crystal growth and processing equipment (Czocharlski, Physical Vaport Transport(PVT), Vertical Bridgman (VB) Vertical Gradient Freeze (VGF)) Contribute to proposals for funded research Collaborate with other engineers, researchers and academic faculty Document research activities in technical reports Some off-site travel will be required.

Faculty rank will be commensurate with education level and experience. Minimum requirements include a Master's degree in and engineering or science discipline. A PhD in Materials Science, Materials Science and Engineering Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering is preferred.

Higher level responsibilities include: Manage Electronic Materials Research projects of small or moderate size and scope; make substantial contributions to determining feasibility of goals and objectives; responsible for assuring quality, cost effectiveness and timeliness of assigned Electronic Materials Research projects. Provide innovative problem solving approaches to enhance organizational capabilities; use peer network to expand technical capabilities and identify new research opportunities Understand broad strategic objectives and contribute to them; nurtures and maintain relationships with major customers/grantors of external research and development grant funding Write, develop, and submit proposals, reports and presentations in the department related to Electronic Materials Research. Maintain external research relationships Identify grant/project follow-on work and persuade customers/grantors to fund; impact customer decisions and strategies Initiate new project concepts and seek funding; develop technical proposals and make presentations to customers/grant sponsors Develop project status reports for appropriate distributions

Required skills/experience includes: Semiconductor bulk single crystal growth processes Semiconductor materials, characterization and device fabrication Knowledge of structural, chemical and electrical char cterization Excellent presentation, interpersonal, and communication skills Good written and verbal communication skills, good presentation skills The ability to work effectively as part of a project team

Preferred skills includes: Experience with wide bandgap/ultra-wide bandgap semiconductor device fabrication. Knowledge of chemical vapor deposition, evaporation, sputtering Material characterization (SEM, EDS, XRD, Raman, FTIR, Interferometry, AFM) Knowledge of ceramic materials processing and characterization Prior leadership of scientists, engineers, technicians and students in a research setting Chemi-Mechanical Polishing (CMP)
