    Position Summary:

    The Phlebotomy Lab Lead performs EKG, point of care testing, and registration in the ambulatory setting. Management of daily operations of Outpatient Laboratory. Assists with all aspects of outpatient phlebotomy front desk training. Rotates through Supervisor On Call responsibilities over inpatient phlebotomy team. Demonstrates expertise in difficult phlebotomy and training new employees.

    Qualifications:

    EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS H.S. Diploma/GED CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS Phlebotomy Technician Certification (PBT) (ASCP) upon hire or Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) (NHA) upon hire or Certified Phlebotomy Tech (NHCO) upon hire and EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Two (2) years Healthcare/Medical - Laboratory/Hematology/Chemistry/Microbiology or Two (2) years Healthcare/Medical - Phlebotomist or One (1) year Phlebotomy experience with one (1) year of receptionist/PSR experience. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Medical Terminology course.

    Essential Functions:

  • Manages daily operations of the Outpatient Laboratory.

  • Assists with all aspects of outpatient phlebotomy training, including blood collection, front desk, point of care testing, specimen processing, and EKG.

  • Assists in the coordination of administrative and staffing activities on assigned shift.

  • Resolve problems independently and facilitate solutions; confer with supervisor to resolve more complex situations.

  • Recommends various personnel actions, including but not limited to hiring, performance appraisals, and promotions.

  • Make work assignments and review work of direct reports.

  • Ensures staff members are adequately trained and competent to perform all required job tasks.

  • Demonstrates expertise in difficult phlebotomy and training new employees.

  • Demonstrates excellent communication and patient care skills.

  • Participates in committee work, as needed.

  • Perform inventory and audits, as directed.

  • The Lab Lead serves patients from newborn to geriatric in the Emergency Department and all inpatient and outpatient areas of the hospital. The Phlebotomy team collects blood from approximately 400 patients each 24-hour period in the hospital and emergency department; in the outpatient laboratory setting, they may collect 50-200 patients per business day dependent on lab location.

  • Provide leadership through technical expertise. Serve as first line supervision for staff, providing immediate guidance for technical and customer-service related issues. Participate in employee training and corrective action. Reassign and coordinate staffing activities.

  • Patient registrations and insurance entry are performed in Epic Prelude. Orders received from non-Carle providers are transcribed into the Epic computer system after state licensure is checked for the ordering provider.

  • Venipunctures are performed using a vacutainer needle and hub, a hypodermic needle with syringe, or a butterfly needle system. Complex blood drawing procedures include a variety of specialized blood collection kits for commercial laboratories and/or research.

  • Perform point of care tests in the outpatient laboratory. Recognize test result or instrument function problems that require additional troubleshooting, perform troubleshooting or seek additional assistance from the Supervisor or Lead as appropriate.

  • Specimens are processed according to specific test needs.

  • Successfully participates in all accreditation and other proficiency testing and annual performance competencies in each of the clinical laboratory testing areas.
