Job Summary
The OB Technician acts as a scrub person, handling instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during surgical procedures and vaginal deliveries. This role also actively participates and assists in planning, implementing and ensuring quality patient care during the procedure.
Essential Functions
General Practice:
Demonstrates Knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique
Assists in gowning and gloving of surgeon and assistants.
Demonstrates knowledge of sterilization and disinfection methods.
Competent in cleaning and processing equipment.
Monitors the needs of the surgeon and the procedure.
Demonstrates knowledge of step-by-step progress of obstetrical procedures and displays dexterity in the use of the required instrumentation.
Implements appropriate safety techniques, such as counting sponges, needles and instruments.
Assists in preparing room and proper positioning of the patient for the procedure.
Handles specimens correctly.
Assists in maintaining unit supplies.
Performs necessary errands to Pharmacy, Lab, and Diagnostic Imaging.
Manages and operates equipment safely and efficiently.
Practices Association of Peri Operative Registered Nurses (AORN) standards and practices for the Operating Room.
Administrative:
Participates in self-evaluation and setting unit goals and strategic plans.
Attends and participates in unit staff meetings and division clerk meetings to provide input into the unit operations and performance improvement.
Cognizant of environmental factors, infection control issues and maintains a safe environment for patient care.
Collects and tabulates monthly statistics in a timely manner.
Collects and reports daily statistics in a timely manner.
Communications:
Consistently utilizes effective interpersonal skills to interact with patients, families, fellow workers, medical staff and visitors.
Demonstrates behavior standards as set forth in Employee Code of Conduct.
Follows documentation procedures with correct form usage and completion.

Qualifications
Technical School Graduate of Surgical Technician School or 2 years experience as surgical scrub technician required
Less than 2 years previous experience as a Surgical Technician required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to address patients, families and hospital personnel.
Must be able to respond mentally, physically and appropriately to emergency situations.
Must be able to work in a fast-paced, ever changing, stressful environment.
Requires close concentration and attention to detail.
Licenses and Certifications
CST - Certified Surgical Technologist preferred
BCLS - Basic Life Support required
