Work Arrangement
Hybrid - This role requires the employee to be onsite a minimum of three days per week. The primary work location will be Warren, MI.
The Role
We are seeking a Networks Operation Center Engineer (Manufacturing) to join our Manufacturing Engineering Cyber Security and Networks team within Automation Systems Architecture. This organization plays a crucial role in supporting GM's industrial networks globally while implementing robust cybersecurity measures.
The position encompasses all manufacturing areas, including Vehicle Systems and Global Propulsion Systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for the regular maintenance of the plant's Operational Technology (OT) network, ensuring compliance with cybersecurity policies, and collaborating with local plant engineers to troubleshoot and resolve network issues, thereby maintaining optimal plant uptime metrics. Additionally, the engineer will document lessons learned to foster continuous improvement.
This role also involves providing technical support for OT networks, working closely with IT and onsite engineers to address industrial network-related challenges. The engineer will conduct regular, proactive health checks of the network, report issues identified through monitoring systems and drive measurable results to enhance network performance.
What You’ll Do
Oversee plant floor automation networking, including Cisco/Hirschmann switches and legacy network hardware.
Optimize network performance, troubleshoot operational impacts, and ensure the functionality of network-based security controls.
Provide coverage for multiple plants, including availability outside scheduled hours as needed.
Participate in the approval process for secure network design, establish and enforce system standards, and create and maintain accurate technical documentation for local area industrial networking.
Engage in after-hours maintenance windows to adjust various systems as required.
Participate in an on-call rotation for network-based support.
Demonstrate knowledge of remote Network Access Control and provide technical expertise for operational enhancements in GM network automation and security.
Deliver on-site support and training as needed.
Set up and coordinate proactive network health checks with site and project leads during launches.
Additional Job Description
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) :
Associate’s degree in IT or a related field, or Cisco Certification.
Experience in network operations and troubleshooting.
Hands-on experience with Ethernet IP/PROFINET, and familiarity with Hirschmann and/or Cisco switch hardware, as well as PLC programming.
Advanced interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration within cross-functional teams.
Familiarity with Network and Computer Communications Standards.
Willingness to travel globally and locally to support other GM sites as needed, with an estimated travel requirement of 10-20% of the time.
Knowledge in both IT networks/cybersecurity and Operational Technology (OT), including troubleshooting network-related issues with PLCs, robots, and/or other industrial devices.
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications) :
Bachelor's degree in IT, Electronics, or Cybersecurity.
Experience with Automation Controls, Manufacturing Engineering process studies, or Industrial Engineering, with knowledge of plant floor systems as an added advantage.
Hands-on experience in PLC controls programming and development, including project coordination and site implementation.
Network certifications such as CCNA, Network+, or equivalent experience in network troubleshooting.
Ability to work independently after training, with a strong eagerness to learn in a multi-disciplinary and dynamic environment.
Proactive in taking initiative to successfully resolve Operational Technology (OT) network issues.
