Primary Purpose

Under the supervision of Crew Leader or other more qualified employee, performs electrical and mechanical work involved in the installation, removal, dismantling, maintenance, alteration, and wiring of electrical equipment; and to perform related work as assigned. Supports planned and emergency switching & grounding operations of transmissions & distribution electric system equipment to isolate or return equipment to service. Provides emergency response escort services to local fire departments, law enforcement, military & various government agencies. Participates in on-the-job training.

Primary Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. To perform such work as cutting pipe and angle iron, breaking masonry, heating compounds and solder, mixing concrete, mortar, fireproofing compounds and other materials; pulling wires and cable, painting and or removing insulation; and supplying Mechanics with tools and materials.

  2. To clean and wash insulators, bushings, transformers, and other equipment; to handle insulating oils and other liquids as instructed; and to perform work on various types of equipment.

  3. To load, unload and store tools, materials, and equipment; to perform minor excavating work; and to clean work areas, tools, and equipment.

  4. As instructed, to drive a truck or truck and trailer, but not the operation of winch or boom.

  5. To assist an employee of a higher grade to install, inspect, dismantle, repair and maintain electrical and associated equipment at substation high voltage equipment (up to 500KV), in Company Substations, Customer Vaults and Overhead busses in Substations.

  6. Support the bending, fitting, and installing copper or aluminum conductors and steel supports; cutting and threading pipe; fitting and making conductor connections; pulling and fireproofing cable; and barricades. To support the clean and blow out, lubricating and making minor adjustments and repairs to equipment; and to operate oil handling equipment.

  7. Perform drilling holes in metal, slate or other materials.

  8. The installation of power and control cable to all types of electrical equipment.

  9. Under the direction of a higher-grade employee, support the pulling in and installation of power and control equipment to all types of equipment.

  10. Support minor building maintenance and repair.

  11. Accountable for taking an active part in safety and productivity. Follows safety rules and procedures as well as ensuring safety oversight of all employees.

  12. Supports planned and unplanned Cost Center Work Activities — Substation Inspections/Maintenance, Environmental Spill Container Inspections, Housekeeping activities and ensures completion of work as assigned.

  13. Prepares various written correspondence.

  14. Loads and secures material, and equipment.

  15. Make recommendations for improving efficiencies and effectiveness of programs/resources and processes.

  16. Supports the related duties as assigned with responding to, investigating, reporting, correcting and referring switchyard security alarms.

  17. Drives company vehicles and operates company radio equipment.

  18. Provides assistance during system emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Five weeks of initial training before the release to the field.

  2. CDL must be obtained prior to being released from the five-week school.

  3. Education equivalent to graduation from high school.

  4. Work rotating shifts, holidays and weekends, as required, consistent with the Labor Agreement.

  5. Climb and work from both extension and step ladders to access: transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switch structures, light fixtures & heaters, cable trays. Climbing through hatches/grates by using fixed vertical steel ladders to enter/exit cable vaults, fire protection rooms, substation roofs.

  6. Lift Portable ground leads in excess of 50 lbs., tool boxes, ladders, power tools, etc.

  7. Work indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures and I vveather conditions. , consistent with the Labor Agreement

  8. Work on or around energized equipment.

  9. Ability to squat, kneel, bend and twist.

  10. Ability to hear equipment operations, arcing conductors, calls on the company radio and telephones, air pressure systems, etc. Ability to see color indications for circuit/equipment status; read drawings, one-line-diagrams, schematic diagrarns, roacl maps, and equipment identification markings.

  11. Ability to stand and work for extended periods of time to inspect substation circuit/equipment; support switching & grounding operations; troubleshoot alarms/blown fuses and maintain substation lighting systems. Ability to walk on uneven surfaces such as blue stone in substation switchyards, etc.

  12. Work at heights up to 40 feet to perform switching & grounding operations on disconnect switches and bus support structures.

  13. Ability to safely work in confined spaces such as inside of vaults and rooms accessed through hatches.

  14. Ability to wear all job related Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E.)

  15. Ability to meet on an annual basis, appropriate physical evaluation identified by Pepco medical as prerequisite requirements to performing certain tasks and training activities while wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) or respirator.

  16. Possess basic knowledge of the Company's switching & tagging procedures.

  17. Possess a valid CDL.

Employees in this classification are NERC and FERC qualified positions. As such, they will be required to comply with NERC and FERC standards and requirements and follow company procedures designed to meet these requirements. Employees in this classification are required to complete and maintain their NERC and FERC certifications annually or may be subject to discipline up to and including termination.

  1. Possess a working knowledge of applicable Company safety regulations and general first aid methods.

  2. Read, write and speak English.

  3. Must be willing and able to work overtime on a regular basis and must be available for call out overtime, consistent with the Labor Agreement.

  4. Must pass a criminal history background check and motor vehicle records check.
