Monday - Friday | 7 AM - 3:30 PM + every 4th weekend, 2 holidays / year

General Summary Statement

The candidate will supervise the operations of laboratory Support Services to include Central Receiving, inpatient, outpatient phlebotomy and Pre-Admission Testing Phlebotomy. This is a working position that may require some hands-on work in phlebotomy and specimen processing, but will retain the supervisory role as the primary focus.

Specific areas of responsibility include oversight of:

  1. Perform Phlebotomy services (inpatient and Pre-Admission Testing)

  2. Perform all tasks regarding specimen processing according to standard operating

procedures

  1. Recruitment/hiring (in conjunction with laboratory administration and HROD)

  2. Scheduling/staffing within budgeted parameters

  3. Assist the Lab Operations Manager with special projects/QA as required

  4. Administrative duties including payroll, oversight of staff scheduling, maintaining

employee competencies and evaluations in a timely manner.

  1. Assist with the review, revision and approval of procedures/policies, forms, and as

indicated. Assist with creation of new procedures, policies and forms, as needed.

  1. Ensure all is staff is trained and assess competency.

  2. Assist with review of Outpatient surveys and address any unacceptable ratings

  3. Monitor employee attendance and address any noncompliance. Ensure payroll is

performed in a timely manner.

  1. Ensure department has sufficient supplies

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

accuracy.

  1. Properly labels specimens with 100% accuracy.

  2. Accurately processes both blood and non-blood specimens: reviews specimen type for

appropriateness and proper labeling according to standard operating procedures.

  1. Maintain staff levels and schedules in an efficient manner and within budget.

  2. Complete staff evaluations in a timely manner

  3. Review and maintain inventory within budget.

  4. Maintain payroll and ensure proper staff time keeping

  5. Develop and maintain policies and procedures including staff orientation, training,

Competency, maintain all documentation.

  1. Oversee the phlebotomy training programs with our affiliates.

  2. Troubleshoot problems and take appropriate action in conjunction with lab administration

and section supervisors.

  1. Assist administrative staff in QA projects as needed.

  2. Demonstrates proficiency with venipuncture and capillary blood. Properly prepares

patient before and after collection; explains procedures in a courteous and professional

manner, makes patient feel at ease, prepares site, executes proper after-care

  1. Performs specimen receipt on all specimens according to standard operating procedures.

  2. Operates centrifuges and aliquots specimens as indicated without delay.

  3. Accepts constructive feedback about performance or behaviors and shows evidence of

change.

  1. Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for actions.

  2. Demonstrates creative thinking and problem solving and knows when to seek

appropriate consultation.

  1. Complies with all Laboratory Safety Policies, applying standard precautions to work

practices, and ensures all staff is compliant. Demonstrate knowledge with chemical or

biological spills. Reports any unsafe practices or conditions to appropriate personnel.

  1. Offers assistance to staff when needed.

  2. Maintains a positive attitude.

  3. Demonstrates knowledge of hospital and departmental polices, and ensures staff follows

them.

  1. Perform in-services and training when indicated.

  2. Maintains confidentiality of all patient and employee information.

  3. Maintains attendance/lateness standards in accordance with hospital policy.

Education Training and Experience

The ideal candidate must be an energetic and dynamic person with strong interpersonal skills and command of information technology modalities, such as the laboratory and hospital information systems and experience in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point) used to create documents and reports. The candidate should also be a seasoned phlebotomist that has a minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in the inpatient and/or outpatient setting. Communication skills, both verbal and written are an important skill set as this position will interact with high level staff on a regular basis. A minimum of 1-year experience in a leadership role is desired.

Licensure/Certification

Phlebotomy certification preferred.
