Monday - Friday, 3 - 11:30 PM + one weekend / month

General Summary Statement

This position will perform specimen processing, clerical, and customer service duties. In addition, this position will back up and assist the Supervisor of Laboratory Support in responsibilities to include scheduling, and maintaining adequate supply inventory. Clerical and customer support responsibilities include, physician and patient phone support, faxing, HIPAA release documentation, or other tasks as necessary. All aspects of specimen handling and preparation are required including a thorough knowledge of specimen types and related equipment. This position is required to deliver specimens to the technical sections in a timely manner

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Introduces self when interacting with patients, families, visitors or other employees

Demonstrates respect for patient, visitor and employee privacy and confidentiality.

Communicates clearly, directly and in a professional manner. Provides information/facts accurately, completely and in a timely manner. Appropriate telephone etiquette demonstrated

Resolves customer complaints with assistance of appropriate personnel

  1. Accurately processes both blood and non-blood specimens: Checks specimen type for appropriateness and proper labeling. Organizes work area in an efficient and error free manner

Operates centrifuges and aliquots specimens as indicated without delay.

  1. Performs specimen receipt on all specimens. Delivers specimens to appropriate sections without delay

  2. Assist and back-up Supervisor of Laboratory Support in matters of staffing and scheduling.

Maintain adequate supply inventory and check for outdated items

Produce copies of records/results for patients with valid HIPAA release documentation.

Records temperatures, cleans and maintains equipment, and notifies supervisor if equipment is in need of repair.

Answers phone inquires in a courteous and professional manner.

Faxes reports to physicians as needed.

  2. Demonstrates safe practices in the performance of assigned job duties. Reports any unsafe practices or conditions to appropriate responsible parties.

  3. Checks CCH email daily for hospital or important interdepartmental communications

  4. Flexible to changes in assignments in the spirit of good teamwork. Offers to help other employees by providing assistance when needed.

10.Open to change and different approaches to work. Recommends new approaches to solving operational problems, issues or concerns.

  1. Demonstrates creative thinking and problem solving and knows when to seek appropriate consultation.

Education Training and Experience

High School diploma or equivalent required

Licensure/Certification

Certified Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) required
