Job purpose
Johnson Matthey will be evaluating recycling and separation processes to recover the PGMs from Hydrogen Fuel Cell and Electrolyser components. The Research Scientist will provide inorganic chemistry expertise in the development of these new and exciting recycling processes, focussed on the Platinum Group Metal (PGM) and Ionomer recovery. They will be responsible for the delivery and application of world class science that will enhance future Johnson Matthey refining technologies, embedding circularity for the critical raw materials in the global energy transition. As the Hydrogen Fuel Cell/ Electrolyser program is part of a Department of Energy funded consortium, across key industrial and academic players, the role will be responsible for execution of technical deliverables as defined in the program.
Principal accountabilities
Embed high environmental, health and safety standards, and behaviours within the role. Develop and implement safe working procedures into the laboratory, seeking to continuously improve safety standards.
Characterization of materials for recycling using a range of different analytical techniques, including development of methods.
Conduct lab-based research and development activities on new and existing Hydrogen fuel cell/electrolyser recycling processes and provide project leadership on such activities.
Collate experimental data appropriately in electronic laboratory notebooks to a high quality. Interpret and summarize experimental work into written technical reports, and presentations as needed, both internally and externally.
Lead scale up and technology transfer activities in collaboration with engineering functions to allow for successful scale up of above processes to pilot equipment.
Contribute to Process Safety reviews as the developed recycling processes moves through scale up from laboratory to pilot scale.
Ensure internal stakeholders are regularly updated on program progress, risks, deliverables, and timelines. Build an effective working relationship with the global technical development team to ensure collaboration and exchange of knowledge and ideas.
Demonstrate initiative, innovation, and creativity to deliver program objectives and encourage others to look for opportunities to innovate.
Carry out any other duties which are within the employee’s skills and abilities whenever reasonably instructed.
Requirements for the role:
PhD with a focus on inorganic chemistry or a Bachelors/Masters in chemistry with a minimum of four years equivalent relevant experience in an industrial R&D environment preferably inorganic focused.
Proven laboratory skills in wet chemistry
Demonstrated experience in inorganic chemistry
Experience with Design of Experiments (DoE) and statistical analysis
