SALARY: $28,742 - $50,298

The Challenge

We are looking for a Maintenance/Construction Technician to join our Ashe County Maintenance team.

In this role, you will:

  • Perform semi-skilled work specializing in 2+ trades related to the maintenance and repair of buildings and related equipment and machinery.
  • Perform general and routine assignments to moderately complex work requiring knowledge and abilities from on-the-job training.
  • Organize and direct staff or inmates in the event of an emergency.
  • Recognize hazardous conditions and take appropriate actions to ensure safeguards.
  • Make suggestions to our County Maintenance Engineer on improvements to facility and operations.
  • Work during nontraditional work hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

What You Bring

  • Knowledge of proper use of equipment.
  • Ability to make decisions based on your knowledge and experience.
  • General knowledge of the principles and techniques in a variety of complex trades.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate common machine shop equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of mechanical equipment and materials used for construction and mechanical operations.
  • Experience inspecting and repairing buildings, grounds, and small engine equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Working knowledge of the methods, practices, and materials used in general maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery.
  • Skills using hand tools, power tools, and woodworking power equipment.
  • Agility to bend and climb on steep and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures.
  • A Class A Commercial Driver's License within 360 days of employment.
  • Safety toe footwear.
  • Ability to obtain supervision of inmate certification and an inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety to transport inmates.

Education and Experience

  • High School/GED diploma; or
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience in mechanical/building trades.
