Monmouth UniversityResilience and Outreach Project Lead (Temporary)Department: Urban Coast InstitutePosition Summary:Monmouth University and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Northeast Fisheries Center James J. Howard Marine Science Laboratory has developed a cooperative research and development project entitled ‘Environmental DNA and fisheries for ecological Resilience and Outreach in NJ Coasts and Communities around the Lower Hudson-Raritan Estuary‘.We seek an enthusiastic, dynamic project lead for this effort who will oversee and coordinate the objectives of this project, including:• Use eDNA metabarcoding to measure fish community composition in the lower Hudson-Raritan Estuary and compare it to historical datasets.• Use eDNA qPCR technologies to map current spawning migration patterns in river herring (Alosids) in rivers in NJ.• Use this project to support and develop programs that recruit and mentor scientists / students who are interested in marine and coastal science.While first-hand experience in the above activities is preferred, candidates with with strong leadership skills looking to learn how to use eDNA for marine fish surveys are also encouraged to apply. The person in this position will work closely with faculty and staff who are part of a well-established marine eDNA lab at Monmouth University, as well as Monmouth University's Urban Coast Institute in this exciting opportunity. This is a grant funded position for up to 2 years (June 2027).This is an in-person, on-campus, non-remote position.For more information about the program, visit the https://www.monmouth.edu/uci/2022/06/20/monmouth-partners-with-noaa-internship-program-to-build-diversity-in-marine-fields/.Required Degree, License or Certifications:Bachelor's degreeRequired Skills or Software:Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skillsRequired Years of Experience: 2Other Requirements:• Bachelor's degree or higher• Experience with water sampling techniques from boats or shoreline• Familiarity with molecular biological techniques such as DNA extraction• Physical ability to routinely lift up to 50 pounds• Ability to drive motor vehicles (e.g. vans / trucks) to and from research sites• A valid driver's license in your state of residence and have had no serious violations (Type A) within the past five (5) years and no more than three (3) moving violations (Type B) in the past three (3) years.
