The Mosquito Surveillance Technician is a grant-funded, part-time position at the Sedgwick County Health Department (SCHD) that works 8 hours per week on Mosquito Control Grant activities. This is a temporary position and will end on October 31, 2024 when the grant funding stops. The position enhances the capacity of the SCHD to conduct mosquito surveillance and protect Sedgwick County residents from mosquito-borne illness. The Mosquito Surveillance Technician sets up five mosquito traps at five different field locations around Sedgwick County each Tuesday evening and collects, packages, and ships mosquitoes to the Kansas Biological Survey for identification and testing each Wednesday morning. The Mosquito Surveillance Technician assists with mosquito surveillance data analysis and maintains a good working relationship with internal partners, community partners and the public.

Conduct Mosquito Surveillance

  • Attend required trainings to learn how to conduct mosquito surveillance
  • Conduct mosquito surveillance (set up traps and take down traps) once per week per protocol
  • Drive to five different locations at night and in the morning for mosquito trapping work
  • Pack and ship mosquitoes found in the traps per required hazmat shipping standards

Analyze Mosquito Surveillance Data

  • Enter grant-related mosquito surveillance data, including mosquito identification and trapping results, mosquito abatement, and educational material distribution
  • Complete mosquito surveillance reports
  • Assist with additional grant activities as assigned

Collaborate and Coordinate with Community Partners

  • Communicate and collaborate with internal staff and external partners
  • Present findings to Sedgwick County Health Department, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and other agencies or the public as requested.

Minimum Qualifications: Two courses in biological sciences. High school Diploma or equivalent. Six months of biology-related field school or work experience. Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US drivers license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with mosquito trapping.
