Job Title:Yates County Re-Entry Peer Advocate
Location:Yates County, NY
Employment Type:Full-Time
Job Summary:
TheYates County Re-Entry Peer Advocateplays a critical role in supporting inmates with substance use disorders as they prepare to re-enter the community. Working under the supervision of the Program Director, this position partners closely with counselors at the Yates County Jail to provide peer support, recovery guidance, and resources. As a role model, the Re-Entry Peer Advocate uses their own recovery journey to inspire hope, assist inmates in developing coping skills, and encourage the successful transition to community living.
Must-Have Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Valid NYS Driver’s License.
Lived experience in mental health or substance use recovery, or experience supporting someone in recovery.
Willingness to participate in peer certification training and obtain CRPA-P certification within four months of employment.
Nice-to-Have Qualifications:
Certified Peer Support Specialist (NYCPS) through OMH or OASAS.
Certified Peer Advocate (CRPA) certification.
Job Requirements:
Key Responsibilities:
Actively participate as a member of the inmate’s treatment team, including attending team meetings and collaborating on treatment planning.
Support inmates in creating individualized recovery plans, including psychiatric advance directives and crisis intervention strategies.
Deliver psychoeducation focused on illness management, recovery skills, and peer support.
Implement and coordinate recovery plans, providing evaluation, consultation, education, and follow-up services.
Serve as a positive role model by sharing personal recovery experiences and teaching inmates effective coping strategies.
Provide case management support, resource navigation, and service coordination to aid the inmate’s reintegration.
Maintain thorough documentation on all assigned cases, supporting inmates in assessing and tracking their progress.
Advocate on behalf of inmates, ensuring access to necessary services and resources.
Communicate relevant inmate issues or concerns to the supervisor and treatment team members as appropriate.
Participate in ongoing training to maintain peer certification.
Utilize crisis intervention and early engagement techniques to support inmates in the early stages of recovery.
Perform additional duties as directed to support the program’s goals.
Skills & Experience:
Minimum age of 18 years old.
Strong interpersonal skills and effective written and verbal communication abilities.
Understanding of recovery principles and knowledge of the inmate population.
Ability to multitask, remain calm in crisis situations, and possess solid problem-solving and time-management skills.
